Who Has Believed Our Report – 2024.03.05

Isaiah 53:1-12 (KJV)

1 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?

2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.

9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.

12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

The question in verse 1 “Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?” We and every preceding generation after the resurrection of Jesus Christ can pose. This verse is quoted in John 12:38:43 and in Romans 12 it says “Romans 10:16 (KJV) But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?”
I encourage you to read these chapters (12 in both cases) to see the context of the quote and relate this to this chapter in Isaiah.
From verses 2 to the end 12 in Isaiah the cross and the gospel is foreshadowed
We can see in other verses like

2 Thessalonians 2:11-12 (KJV)

11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
It all has to do with what we believe. We either believe in the good news (gospel) or a lie.
If people don’t believe the gospel and reject it they receive what they want which is a delusion. The reason is because they love the sin they live in. We are living in a world where most people have are in this condition and are haters of God.

Matthew 24:9-14 (KJV)

9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.

10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.

12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

Despite this, let us encourage one another to stand fast, persevere, not be discouraged to share our faith. As foreshadowed in detail, in Isaiah, Jesus suffered these things for everyone, to pay the price for our sin, carried our sin, interceding for us so that we who once were enemies of God be reconciled with a price that we could not pay. Because He saved us it is 100% possible that there are others who will believe, repent and follow Jesus. Let each one of us fulfill His great commission in the capacity He has called and gifted us.
