Jeremiah 2:13 (KJV) For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
Forsaking the Lord is backsliding. He is the one who provides living water. John 4:10 (KJV) Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. If we believe in Jesus Christ we have that living water. John 7:38 (KJV) He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. When we then turn again to pursue wickedness instead of the godliness we backslide. It starts of subtlety little by little. A compromise here and there. Then suddenly we realise how far we have wandered away. Backsliding brings dissatisfaction – it is like chasing after the wind Ecclesiastes 1:14 (ASV) I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind. – pleasures of sin don’t last. They never fully satisfy just as the cisterns can’t hold water. We will be found lacking.
Jeremiah 2:19 (ASV) Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and a bitter, that thou hast forsaken Jehovah thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts. When we sin, it will find us out and in the end the Lord uses it to correct us. We have the choice to repent, to turn back to the Lord Jesus Christ who gives us living water. Oh how merciful He is going after us who wander away to call us back to Himself. In that place of backsliding we have a choice to resist and harden our hearts and keep going in the downward spiral till it is too late or turn back to the Lord. Acts 3:19 (ASV) Repent ye therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that so there may come seasons of refreshing from the presence of the Lord;
Let us today decide to pursue Jesus Christ, to have a healthy fear of the Lord and to never forsake He who is the Fountain of Living Water.
2 Timothy 2:19-22 (ASV)
19 Howbeit the firm foundation of God standeth, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his: and, Let every one that nameth the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness.
20 Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some unto honor, and some unto dishonor.
21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honor, sanctified, meet for the master’s use, prepared unto every good work.
22 But flee youthful lusts, and follow after righteousness, faith, love, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
Jesus Christ, He is our righteousness, He is love, He is our peace, He is the fountain of living water that never runs dry.
