Take Heed To The Word Of GOD – 2024.03.21

Hebrews 2:1-4 (ASV)

1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things that were heard, lest haply we drift away from them.

2 For if the word spoken through angels proved stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward;

3 how shall we escape, if we neglect so great a salvation? which having at the first been spoken through the Lord, was confirmed unto us by them that heard;

4 God also bearing witness with them, both by signs and wonders, and by manifold powers, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to his own will.

In Jeremiah 3 it talks a lot about backsliding:

Jeremiah 3:12-13 (KJV)

12 Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith the LORD; and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the LORD, and I will not keep anger for ever.

13 Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast transgressed against the LORD thy God, and hast scattered thy ways to the strangers under every green tree, and ye have not obeyed my voice, saith the LORD.

Here in Hebrews we are encouraged to take head of the things we have heard for if we do not we will drift away from the Lord. There is a saying prevention is better than the cure. Yes as we see in Jeremiah God has a cure for backsliding (unless we go into total apostasy the sin from where there is no repentance) but we can save ourself a lot of heartache and pain if we just “take heed” and not neglect our salvation. How do we take heed and nurture our salvation? It boils down to being doers of the word, that is being obedient to Jesus Christ, giving more serious attention to the gospel, the Word of God, nurturing our relation ship with Jesus, keeping Him number one. Some things that are essential and help us to do this is daily devotions, gathering together as the church of Jesus Christ, being teachable, hungering for the things of God, putting into practice what we hear and learn.

Hebrews 2:17-18 (KJV)

17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

These things and anything else in Gods Kingdom are not done in our own strength it is the Lord how comes and aids us if we let Him and if we make a mistake He picks us up, cleans us up and encourages us to keep going if we let Him.
In the Finis Dake commentary it lists “Eighteen Safeguards for Christians” in the book of Hebrews that will help us stay on the straight and narrow:
1.    Hearing (Heb 2:1)
2.    Heeding (Heb 3:12)
3.    Exhorting (Heb 3:13)
4.    Fearing (Heb 4:1)
5.    Laboring (Heb 4:11)
6.    Coming (Heb 4:16; Heb 10:19-20)
7.    Leaving (Heb 6:1)
8.    Showing (Heb 6:11-12)
9.    Drawing (Heb 10:22)
10.    Holding (Heb 3:6; Heb 10:23)
11.    Laying (Heb 12:1)
12.    Looking (Heb 12:2; Hebrews 15)
13.    Considering (Heb 12:3)
14.    Lifting (Heb 12:12)
15.    Making (Heb 12:13)
16.    Following (Heb 12:14)
17.    Going (Heb 13:13)

And I would add 19 Fellowshipping (Heb 10:24-25) as we need one another.
