2 Peter 2:1-4 (KJV)
1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.
4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

It shows that there can be people in the church who will bring deception, false doctrines, etc. for various reasons like:
- Self seeking, pride and fame: Acts 20:30 (KJV) Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.
- Love of riches (see 2 Peter 2:3 quoted above)
- Unrepentant and lovers of sin, despise authority of both earthly governments and spiritual: 2 Peter 2:10 (KJV) But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.
- Forsaken Jesus, with no self control, unable to stop sinning due to their hardened hearts: 2 Peter 2:14-15 (KJV) 14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children: 15 Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;
- Salves to corruption: 2 Peter 2:18-19 (KJV) 18 For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error. 19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.
What are some of the things we are to do about this?
- In the next chapter Peter advises us to be mindful of truth that we were taught in the Word of God, the gospel of salvation: 2 Peter 3:2-3 (KJV) 2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour: 3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
- Be diligent in walking on the truth according to the Word obeying Jesus thereby keeping ourself clean: 2 Peter 3:14-15 (KJV) 14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. 15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;
- Be vigilant and steadfast (see Being Vigilant And Steadfast – 2024.04.111 Peter 5:8-11 https://missioncommunities.network/2024/04/11/beingvigilantandsteadfast-2024-04-11/).
- Hold fast to our confession of Jesus Christ, comit to body ministry, gather together, encouraging and exhorting each other: Hebrews 10:23-25 (KJV) 23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) 24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: 25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
- Being watchful and remembering the warning given to us: Acts 20:31 (KJV) Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.
Therefore let us 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 (ASV) 13 Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. 14 Let all that ye do be done in love.
Hebrews 12:1-2 (KJV)
1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Jude 1:20-23 (KJV)
20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,
21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
22 And of some have compassion, making a difference:
23 And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.
