2 Peter 1:10 (KJV) Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
Diligence in our walk with Jesus Christ is essential. To emphasise this In the closing of the letter Peter repeats the exhortation of being diligent.
2 Peter 3:14 (KJV) Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.
What are some of the things that being diligent in our walk accomplish?
- It enables us to stand firm and not fall even if we stumble we will not fall.
- We are found in Christ.
- We have GOD’s peace.
- We will be refined, transformed, becoming more like Jesus.
- We walk in His forgiveness being cleansed by His blood.
- We will be found spotless and blameless when we meet Him.
Therefore
Ephesians 6:11-13 (KJV)
11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
In verse 10 it refers to “if you do these things” as a prerequisite to not falling. What are they? They are fruits of the Holy Spirit, characteristics that GOD forms in us as we surrender to Him. They are listed in the previous verses 5 to 7: - We start of with faith which is what we receive when we hear His word. Romans 10:17 (NKJV) So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
- Adding to that virtue (valour, moral excellence, as modesty, purity ,…)
- Adding to virtue knowledge (knowing Jesus more and more, knowing His word, His will)
- Adding to our knowledge temperance (self control). We need self control to obey what we know is right and not give in to the carnal nature (flesh).
- Adding to temperance perseverance. We need to be consistent and not excessive self control for a day and the next we do not. The LORD gives us the power to persevere despite of how we feel or the situation we face.
- Adding to perseverance godliness (reverence, respect, holiness, devotion.. ). When we persevere we start living a godly life.
- Adding to godliness brotherly kindness (the love which Christians cherish for each other as brethren).
- And finally adding to that Charity (love, that is, affection or benevolence, love feast). 1 Corinthians 13:13 (KJV) And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
Adding these is our choice, GOD gives us and grows in us the things we are to add but we need to cooperate with Him.
2 Peter 1:8 (NKJV) For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Let us posses these things and abound in them more and more. GOD has given them to us but we need to posses them like Joshua was given the land and had to posses it.
Let us be diligent to do what is says in 2 Peter 3:18 (KJV) But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
