Proverbs 11:14 (KJV) Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.
When we need to make major decisions there are times were it would be wise to seek counsel, especially when we do not have the wisdom for that decision. “Proverbs 15:22 (KJV) Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.”. There are a few things to consider when seeking counsel.
- One has to seek it genuinely, not just to tick of the box. “Proverbs 12:1 (KJV) Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.”
- One has to be willing to listen and heed good counsel, not just looking for confirmation on ones own preference. “Proverbs 12:15 (KJV) The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.”
- It requires humility as we can see from the two points above. “1 Peter 5:5 (KJV) Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.”
- We want to learn and become wiser. “Proverbs 19:20 (KJV) Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.”
- Who are we seeking counsel from? We are not to seek counsel from the wicked or worldly. We are to seek counsel from the wise and godly, those who know GOD and His word. In the end all good counsel comes from the LORD. “Isaiah 28:29 (KJV) This also cometh forth from the LORD of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.” There are times where we can not see clearly (for example our emotions are in the way) and need others to provide advise. When we need that make sure you go to people you trust, respect “1 Corinthians 6:4 (KJV) If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church.”, know the Word of God “Proverbs 20:5 (KJV) Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.”, will be impartial, seek GOD, fear GOD, are humble, are quick to listen and slow to speak, are our friends “Proverbs 27:9 (KJV) Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man’s friend by hearty counsel.”, “Proverbs 19:21 (KJV) There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.”
Let us be wise and seek counsel when needed and from the right people the LORD put in our life.
