In today’s bible reading plan we read:
1 Corinthians 6:1-11 (KJV)
1 Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints?
2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?
3 Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?
4 If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church.
5 I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren?
6 But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers.
7 Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded?
8 Nay, ye do wrong, and defraud, and that your brethren.
9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
Here we can see that in Corinth Christians were taking each other to court using the worldly legal system when they had disagreements to resolve. Paul exposes this carnality and shows us how we should deal with disagreements as Christians in the Church. This scripture teaches us that the Christian should not go to law with a brother in civil courts.
Instead of being greedy and or selfish we should act in love. “Romans 12:10 (KJV) Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;”, “1 Peter 4:8 (KJV) And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.” And “John 13:35 (KJV) By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” This also is a witness also to the world.
Paul gives us two way to handle disputes:
- As in verse 7 we should yield to the other person by accepting wrong and letting ourselves be cheated.
- Seek for mediation in the church with: respected, wise, mature, godly people.
The Bible Knowledge Commentary states regarding 1 Corinthians 6:7-8
“Because their greed dishonored God, Paul concluded that the important issue was lost before the case had begun. He therefore said that mundane loss was preferable to the spiritual loss which the lawsuits produced. As it was, the Corinthian lawsuits seemed not to have been so much a matter of redressing wrong or seeing justice served as a means for personal gratification at the expense of fellow believers. This was “body life” at its worst!”.
And the Defender’s Study Bible summaries verse 7 well: “rather take wrong. This principle is as relevant today as in Paul’s days. Christians ought to love one another, not sue one another! Christians, like unbelievers, do unfortunately get into mundane arguments and disagreements with each other. They should be able to settle such arguments amicably, however, as Christian brothers. If not, they should be willing to accept Christian mediation from disinterested fellow-Christians. Failing this, the more mature Christian should be willing simply to yield to the other, even if he is legally in the right. Above all, they should not take the matter to court, as this damages the testimony of the whole church. ”
Let us be encouraged to not bring our dirty laundry to the world but deal with it in a godly way be being: wise, merciful, forgiving, gracious and loving. Jesus forgives us so we should forgive one another too “Luke 6:37 (KJV) Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:”
