Discernment of false signs and wonders – 2024.06.07

Deuteronomy 13:1-3 (KJV)
1 If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder,
2 And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them;
3 Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
The question is not if there be deception but when. Throughout the New Testament we see warnings of false prophets, teachers and brethren. For example: “Matthew 24:24 (KJV) For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.” And “2 Peter 2:1 (KJV) But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.”
In Deuteronomy we see two very important things:

One is the of the reasons for this deception. It is that GOD is testing peoples hearts as we can see in Deuteronomy 13:3. “2 Timothy 4:3-4 (KJV) For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”

Two that signs and wonders from false prophets and teachers can be authentic in that they actually happen and can be verified.
Therefore instead of saying “we believe that whatever this person is saying as the truth because great sings and wonders are happening” we should use the discernment GOD has given us. We should not just believe the prophet or teacher because of the signs. “1 John 4:1-3 (KJV) Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.”. We should check out what they say to see if it is actually correct. We need to see if it is sound biblical doctrine and not scripture taken out of context or revelation that contradicts and or adds to scripture and claims to be directly from GOD superseding the written Word of God.
We are to test the spirits. Examine the fruit of the prophet, teacher or brethren “Matthew 7:16-20 (KJV) Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.”.
To do that we need to be His sheep – that’s is born again by the Spirit of GOD – and growing in the knowledge of GOD and His Word and the fruits of the Holy Spirit. “John 3:3 (KJV) Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” and “John 10:3-5 (KJV) To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. 4 And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. 5 And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.”
We need to understand that there are different opinions in regards to some teaching that is why there are different denominations (not including cults) and these opinions can change as the Holy Spirit teaches us but we are united in foundational doctrines (we might look at these in another devotion) “Hebrews 6:1-2 (KJV) Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.” who Jesus Christ is, united in the gospel. But as in Deuteronomy it is those who teach and lead people to a different god that is a different Jesus Christ a different gospel “1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (KJV) For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”, “2 Corinthians 11:3-4 (KJV) But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.”. There are many, for example, Christ not come in the flesh, as quoted above in 1 John 4:3.
Therefore let us (as we have been saying often in these devotions) “1 Corinthians 16:13-14 (KJV) Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. 14 Let all your things be done with charity.”
