Matthew 28:18-20 (ASV)
18 And Jesus came to them and spake unto them, saying, All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit:
20 teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.
The great commission has the last marching orders from Jesus to all His followers. We all have different parts to play in this. All the things Jesus Christ instructed us to do are not done by our own authority using our own abilities but we are to do them under and in His authority and by the abilities, gifts and talents He gives us. He is the one working through us. He is the head and we are His body i.e. His hands and feet.
Today let us look at “go”, the 1st part of His instructions from which all others follow. Without going the rest can not happen.
The word “go” is an action and in the Strong Concordance
G419 πορεύομαι poreuomai por-yoo’-om-ahee
Middle voice from a derivative of the same as G3984; to traverse, that is, travel (literally or figuratively; especially to remove [figuratively die], live, etc.): – depart, go (away, forth, one’s way, up), (make a, take a) journey, walk.
In English the word “go” is used in many different ways but in the context here we can see that is means: to move or travel, proceed, to pursue a certain course, to resort to another, as for aid…
Therefore to go we have to do something. We are go to where people are. That can be right from our doorstep to a far away country. It is wherever the LORD sends us. It can be our neighbours, at work, wherever we can meet people who are willing to listen. For some of us it is to other parts of our country or even other nations but we all start where we are now. “Matthew 10:11-14 (ASV) And into whatsoever city or village ye shall enter, search out who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go forth. 12 And as ye enter into the house, salute it. 13 And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, as ye go forth out of that house or that city, shake off the dust of your feet.” If people don’t receive us then we need to move on.
Before His disciples were to go Jesus Christ instructed them to wait for the baptism of the Holy Spirit “Acts 1:4-5 (ASV) and, being assembled together with them, he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, said he, ye heard from me: 5 for John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days hence.”. We can be His witness without the Holy Spirit baptism as Jesus sent out His disciples before the outpouring of the Holy Spirit (see quote of Matthew 10 above). Every believer, when born again, has the in dwelling of the Holy Spirit through Whom Jesus Christ and the Father are in us. Here it talks about a baptism, an infilling, … that we need on an ongoing basis to empower us. “Acts 4:31 (ASV) And when they had prayed, the place was shaken wherein they were gathered together; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spake the word of God with boldness.”. Maybe another time we will look at all this in more detail. What is important now is that Jesus said “Acts 1:8 (ASV) But ye shall receive power, when the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” Therefore let us not think that we cannot do this. Our going is not alone (verse 20 “lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.”). Also He sends us out not as individuals. Therefore as part of the Mission Communities Network vision we “go together”, support one another as a body does. Our going is also not without authority and empowerment. In the end it is His work. He is the LORD of the harvest “Luke 10:2 (ASV) And he said unto them, The harvest indeed is plenteous, but the laborers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he send forth laborers into his harvest.”. Let us not just pray for others to work in His fields but let our prayer be like “Isaiah 6:8 (ASV) And I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then I said, Here am I; send me.”
