The great commission – TEACHING – 2024.06.13

Matthew 28:18-20 (ASV)
18 And Jesus came to them and spake unto them, saying, All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit:
20 teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.
The great commission gives us the last marching orders from Jesus to all His followers. We all have different parts to play in this. All the things Jesus Christ instructed us to do are not done by our own authority using our own abilities but we are to do them under and in His authority and by the abilities, gifts and talents He gives us. He is the one working through us. He is the head and we are His body i.e. His hands and feet.
Today let us look at “teaching”, the 4th part of His instructions.
Part of making disciples for Jesus is to teach His Word and ways. Teaching comes in many forms. To help us fulfil the great commission, to discover and fulfil our purpose and calling, to follow Him, Jesus Christ gives gifts to the church (us). “Ephesians 4:11-16 (ASV) And he gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 for the perfecting of the saints, unto the work of ministering, unto the building up of the body of Christ: 13 till we all attain unto the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a fullgrown man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 14 that we may be no longer children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, in craftiness, after the wiles of error; 15 but speaking truth in love, may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, even Christ; 16 from whom all the body fitly framed and knit together through that which every joint supplieth, according to the working in due measure of each several part, maketh the increase of the body unto the building up of itself in love.” Each of the gifts He has given teach us how to perform different areas of ministry and grow in Christ. Like one aspect of teachers is that they teach us how we can explain and teach the Word of God to others as we go and make disciples and evangelists how to share the good news to unbelievers. There are various ways of teaching that Jesus used and we are to do the same.
One is teaching by example. This is one of the best ways to teach as we not only hear and or read it but we see it in action. That is why Paul said “1 Corinthians 11:1 (ASV) Be ye imitators of me, even as I also am of Christ.”. Our life should reflect our teaching and not contradict it, that would be hypocritical and Jesus Christ spoke very sternly to hypocrites. The other way of teaching is by parables, using activities, things we know in our everyday life to teach principles of the Kingdom of God. Any of what we teach should be from the Word of God being rightly divided “2 Timothy 2:14-15 (ASV) Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them in the sight of the Lord, that they strive not about words, to no profit, to the subverting of them that hear. 15 Give diligence to present thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, handling aright the word of truth.”.
Before people come to Christ we preach/teach the gospel the good news not by our own abilities by by the power of the Holy Spirit both in example, words, sings and wonders “1 Corinthians 2:1-5 (ASV) And I, brethren, when I came unto you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. 4 And my speech and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: 5 that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.”
When people have come to Christ our teaching changes “1 Corinthians 2:6-14 (ASV) We speak wisdom, however, among them that are fullgrown: yet a wisdom not of this world, nor of the rulers of this world, who are coming to nought: 7 but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, even the wisdom that hath been hidden, which God foreordained before the worlds unto our glory: 8 which none of the rulers of this world hath known: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory: 9 but as it is written, Things which eye saw not, and ear heard not, And which entered not into the heart of man, Whatsoever things God prepared for them that love him. 10 But unto us God revealed them through the Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 11 For who among men knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of the man, which is in him? even so the things of God none knoweth, save the Spirit of God. 12 But we received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is from God; that we might know the things that were freely given to us of God. 13 Which things also we speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Spirit teacheth; combining spiritual things with spiritual words. 14 Now the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him; and he cannot know them, because they are spiritually judged.”
As we can see from these verses both are empowered and come from the Holy Spirit. He the Holy Spirit is the one teaching us and teaching through us, even reminding us of the Word as we needed it“John 14:26 (ASV) But the Comforter, even the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you.”. We are only earthen vessels that GOD chose to use “2 Corinthians 4:7 (ASV) But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the exceeding greatness of the power may be of God, and not from ourselves;”. All that we do in the Kingdom of God is based on faith and empowered by GOD Himself through the Holy Spirit. GOD uses our character, unique make up to (how He designed us) and our experience in His work.
Talking about experience, one important thing is not to use our or other peoples experience to then, out of that, form a teaching or even doctrine. Rather we should use the Word of God and then can draw on our experience as an example.
When teach we are to lay a good foundation. This foundation is described in “Hebrews 6:1-2 (ASV) Wherefore leaving the doctrine of the first principles of Christ, let us press on unto perfection; not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2 of the teaching of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.”.
We all can teach to a certain extend what Jesus Christ has taught us in His word by the Holy Spirit and His followers. The main way for us to do this is to live a life of obedience to Jesus being a living demonstration of the Kingdom of God.
Therefore let us do what is written in “1 Peter 3:15-16 (ASV) but sanctify in your hearts Christ as Lord: being ready always to give answer to every man that asketh you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, yet with meekness and fear: 16 having a good conscience; that, wherein ye are spoken against, they may be put to shame who revile your good manner of life in Christ.”.
