The great commission – MORE ON TEACHING – 2024.06.14

Matthew 28:18-20 (ASV)
18 And Jesus came to them and spake unto them, saying, All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit:
20 teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.
The great commission gives us the last marching orders from Jesus to all His followers. We all have different parts to play in this. All the things Jesus Christ instructed us to do are not done by our own authority using our own abilities but we are to do them under and in His authority and by the abilities, gifts and talents He gives us. He is the one working through us. He is the head and we are His body i.e. His hands and feet.
Today let us look a little bit more at “teaching” that we covered yesterday, the 4th part of His instructions.
When Jesus Christ taught he let his disciples and other ask questions. For example Nicodemus ask Jesus questions, “John 3:1-7 (ASV) Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: 2 the same came unto him by night, and said to him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that thou doest, except God be with him. 3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born anew.”
Also when teaching, one can ask questions. “Matthew 22:41-46 (ASV) Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, 42 saying, What think ye of the Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The son of David. 43 He saith unto them, How then doth David in the Spirit call him Lord, saying, 44 The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, Till I put thine enemies underneath thy feet? 45 If David then calleth him Lord, how is he his son? 46 And no one was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.”
When we gather together and study the Word of God together those who teach or facilitate ask questions and also answer questions. If no one knows (inspired by the Holy Spirit) how to answer then we should take it on notice and see if we discover the answer later.
“Matthew 13:51-52 (ASV) Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea. 52 And he said unto them, Therefore every scribe who hath been made a disciple to the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.” We also need to ensure that everyone understands and be humble enough to say we don’t. GOD’s word is like a treasure and by the teaching of the Holy Spirit we both share by reminder and repetition as well as bringing new understanding teaching a mixture of old and new truths. That is old and new to the hearers – not a new doctrine or extra biblical revelation. We all need to be reminded of things “2 Peter 3:1-2 (ASV) This is now, beloved, the second epistle that I write unto you; and in both of them I stir up your sincere mind by putting you in remembrance; 2 that ye should remember the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and the commandment of the Lord and Saviour through your apostles:” and we all do not know or understand everything (we are not GOD who does). In our human limitations we always need to humble and teachable.
Let us consider, learn from each others good examples and have the attitude of what is written in “Philippians 3:12-17 (ASV) Not that I have already obtained, or am already made perfect: but I press on, if so be that I may lay hold on that for which also I was laid hold on by Christ Jesus. 13 Brethren, I count not myself yet to have laid hold: but one thing I do, forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before. 14 I press on toward the goal unto the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, be thus minded: and if in anything ye are otherwise minded, this also shall God reveal unto you: 16 only, whereunto we have attained, by that same rule let us walk. 17 Brethren, be ye imitators together of me, and mark them that so walk even as ye have us for an ensample.”
