Joshua 9:14 (KJV) And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.
Asking for counsel from the LORD for major decisions can prevent us from getting tricked like Joshua and the leaders in Joshua 9. GOD has given us the ability to make decisions and we make them throughout the day: what to eat, what to wear, etc.. With the knowledge of the Word of God and His ways we make make wise daily decisions. 
For major decisions (like Israel faced to make an allegiance) we should always first ask the LORD and the be open to His guidance by the Holy Spirit and through His Word and asking for advise from the right people. 
There are times when GOD asks us to do things which go contrary to the advise of family and friends. “Acts 21:12-14 (KJV) And when we heard these things, both we, and they of that place, besought him not to go up to Jerusalem. 13 Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus. 14 And when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, The will of the Lord be done.” In the end all, our decisions need to be done by faith that it is what the LORD GOD has shown us and therefore is the right one. 
Let us keep reminding each other and ourselves when we have to make important decisions to first consult Jesus Christ and trust in Him knowing that:
“James 1:5 (KJV) If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”
