Jonah 2:1-2 (KJV)
1 Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish’s belly,
2 And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.
The LORD GOD even rescued Jonah from drowning before he came to turn back to Him. Then when he came to his end after running away from GOD and in desperation of his affliction cried out to the LORD and repented the LORD heard and rescued him. 
The same goes for us, when we realise we have been hiding from GOD or running away doing our own thing not wanting to obey Him and come to a point of affliction and call out to Him in repentance He will hear us. GOD is so good and loves us so much that He will make things happen that can cause us to turn back to Him. So when we are in difficulties let us not keep running way but instead turn back to Him for in Jesus Christ great mercy He gives us opportunity to realise our backsliding and grants us repentance. “Psalms 32:1-2 (KJV) A Psalm of David, Maschil. Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. [2] Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.” 
We need to acknowledge our sin and confess them to the the LORD Jesus Christ  “Psalms 32:5 (KJV) I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.”
Then the LORD will “Psalms 32:8 (KJV) I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.”
And we will experience His mercy, our heart becomes upright and we will have great joy in GOD’s salvation “Psalms 32:10-11 (KJV) Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the LORD, mercy shall compass him about. [11] Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.”
