Hebrews 12:1-4 (KJV)
1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.
This chapter is part of our daily reading plan. Have a good read of it. We see how GOD deals with us and what our responsibilities are:
- Lay aside, walk away from, everything that hinders us in our walk with Jesus Christ. This includes the sin we struggle with. Everyone has a sin that keeps nagging at us. The way we deal with it is by “James 4:7 (KJV) Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” As in verse 4 we are in a battle striving against sin.
- Being patient, we can’t rush GOD and what His is doing and patience is needed when we face difficulties (including sin). “James 1:2-4 (KJV) My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; [3] Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. [4] But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”
- Everything comes from Jesus Christ. He is the author and perfected of our faith (see verse 2). Therefore we need to keep our eyes on Him. We do this by reading the bible, praying, spending time with Him, gathering regularly with other believers, keeping Him the centre of our lives, and by doing what we read in verse 1 (see the two point above).
- Make Jesus Christ our example to live by. As disciples of Jesus Christ we desire to be like Him and imitate Him. He demonstrated endurance at the cross and kept His eyes on the great joy that awaited Him (the salvation of many). We also can look toward heaven the place He has prepared for us “John 14:1-4 (KJV) Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. [2] In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. [3] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. [4] And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.”
If we fail we know that GOD loves us and will chasten us bring us back to walk with Him “Hebrews 12:5-6 (KJV) And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: [6] For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.” Let us “Hebrews 12:12-17 (KJV) Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; [13] And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed. [14] Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: [15] Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; [16] Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. [17] For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.” And “Hebrews 12:28-29 (KJV) Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: [29] For our God is a consuming fire.”
There is so much there but thanks be to GOD that He is the one who has done the work “John 19:30 (KJV) When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”. Our salvation is totally dependent on faith in Jesus Christ and the gospel and out of this come the good works that He has prepared. We can not add to our salvation as Jesus Christ has done it all but we can throw it away by apostasy “Hebrews 10:26-27 (KJV) For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, [27] But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.” When we stop believing in the gospel and reject the work of Jesus Christ on the cross we are like Esau. Maybe one day we will write more about this. But know this that if we don’t stop relying on the cross, the gospel of Christ, He will bring us home. Let us be encouraged to keep our eyes on Jesus Christ and follow Him and He will do the rest.
Here are some more verses to encourage us:
“Psalms 40:8 (KJV) I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.”
He writes it on our heart and it becomes our delight.
“Micah 6:8 (KJV) He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” Will become our desire.
