1 John 1:5-10 (KJV)
5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
Jesus Christ is the light of the world “John 9:5 (KJV) As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” And because He dwells in us by the Holy Spirit, we are also the light of the world “Matthew 5:14 (KJV) Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.”.
We see five ifs, conditions, in this passage, which help us to examine ourself and make changes if needed so we shine brightly for Jesus. Let us look at them briefly now.

  1. If we say we have fellowship with Jesus Christ, who is light, but our actions and thoughts are dark (evil) we actually are lying and don’t have fellowship with Jesus Christ otherwise we would be transformed by His light.
  2. If we walk in the light, that is following Jesus Christ – obeying Him, we gather together and the blood of Jesus Christ washes us form our sins. Jesus Christ said “John 15:10 (KJV) If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.” And “John 15:12 (KJV) This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.”.Therefore in other words fellowship with other Christians is an indication that we are waking in the light. We gather together and through that demonstrate GOD’s unconditional love for one another. Walking in the light also means we do not hide our sins but confess them to Jesus Christ and repent. We know that if we do that we be one clean.
  3. If we say we have no sin we are deluded and under self-deception, we are not speaking the truth. “Romans 3:23 (KJV) For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” Even walking in the light we fall short of GOD’s standard and miss the mark. But instead of giving up and letting sin succumb us we call on Jesus Christ to save, deliver, and forgive us as mentioned above.
  4. If we confess our sin we can be assured of forgiveness and that we will be totally clean. Therefore when we walk in the light we are humble and realise our failings, keeping short accounts with GOD. If we don’t we are in danger of backsliding, hardening our heart towards the convictions of the Holy Spirit and start walking again in darkness.
  5. If we say we have not sinned sort of repeats the third if. This indicates that it is very important. There is a slight difference between the two. The first says no sin the last says sinned. No sin means, I believe, being totally free from sin and therefore will never sin. Not sinned means, I believe, we say we did not sin even when we missed the mark. That is knowing we can sin but making ourself believe that at that particular instant we did not sin. This again will start us on the path of backsliding, in that mindeste we be saying the wrong we are doing is not wrong.

Therefore let us be encouraged to have fellowship with GOD and each other, practicing GOD’s love at every opportunity, examining ourself and keeping short accounts with GOD “Matthew 6:12-13 (KJV) And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. [13] And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”
