2 Samuel 21:1-3 (KJV)
1 Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.
2 And the king called the Gibeonites, and said unto them; (now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; and the children of Israel had sworn unto them: and Saul sought to slay them in his zeal to the children of Israel and Judah.)
3 Wherefore David said unto the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? and wherewith shall I make the atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of the LORD?
Read every verse from 2 Samuel 21:1-14 to get the complete picture of what happened.
In 2 Samuel 21:14 it concludes with “2 Samuel 21:14 (KJV) And the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son buried they in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the sepulchre of Kish his father: and they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God was intreated for the land.”.
Breaking oaths has a much greater impact than we think or imagine.
The LORD GOD wants us to honour our oaths and commitments as we can see here. Jesus said “Matthew 5:37 (KJV) But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.”. “James 4:15 (KJV) For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.”. If we break them there are consequences including the LORD’s and our reputation, our integrity and trust in our words will be tarnished, we disrespect people. It is better to be “James 1:19 (KJV) Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:” and not make promises at all but still do it than making a promise and then not doing it.
If we have failed in keeping our word we need to confess our fault to the LORD and the person we have let down “1 John 1:9 (KJV) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” “James 5:16 (KJV) Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”.
Another lesson here is, when we do not know why things are not working out or things are going wrong we should seek the LORD to find out what is going on and then rectify it if needed and possible.
Therefore be encourage to not rush into saying “I will, I promise, yes, no, …..” and once we have committed ourself prayerfully, to always do what we promised even it it costs us more than anticipated. This will bring glory to Jesus Christ and provide a good testimony. “Luke 9:23 (KJV) And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.“ For more on this topic have a look at “Our word – 2024.07.03 https://missioncommunities.network/2024/07/03/our-word-2024-07-03/”
