Ephesians 5:1 (ASV) Be ye therefore imitators of God, as beloved children;
Here we are encouraged to imitate Jesus Christ. It is about following Him. “Ephesians 5:1 (KJV) Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;”. If we are in Jesus Christ our desire is to be like Him. “1 John 3:1-3 (ASV) Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of God; and such we are. For this cause the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. [2] Beloved, now are we children of God, and it is not yet made manifest what we shall be. We know that, if he shall be manifested, we shall be like him; for we shall see him even as he is. [3] And every one that hath this hope set on him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.”.
How can we do this? How can that happen? Much can be said and written about this but let us just have a glimpse into this.
No one by their own ability or strength can imitate or follow Jesus Christ. The only way we can progressively be come like Him (1 John 3:2) it to be born again by the Holy Spirit. When we are born again Jesus Christ Dewald in us by the Holy Spirit. “1 Corinthians 3:16 (ASV) Know ye not that ye are a temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?”.
“Colossians 1:26-27 (ASV) even the mystery which hath been hid for ages and generations: but now hath it been manifested to his saints, [27] to whom God was pleased to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:”.
“Romans 8:10-11 (ASV) And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the spirit is life because of righteousness. [11] But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwelleth in you, he that raised up Christ Jesus from the dead shall give life also to your mortal bodies through his Spirit that dwelleth in you.”
Therefore it is because of the indwelling of Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit we can reflect more and more of Him in our life. The Holy Spirit bears the fruit in us as we let ourself be transformed and our minds renewed by Him and the washing of the Word of God which is Jesus Christ. “Galatians 5:22-23 (ASV) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, [23] meekness, self-control; against such there is no law.”.
“Romans 12:1-2 (ASV) I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service. [2] And be not fashioned according to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
So now the question is how can we be born again? The answer is in John chapter 3:
“John 3:3-7 (ASV) Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God. [4] Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? [5] Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. [6] That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. [7] Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born anew.”
Born of water is when we are born in the flesh. We all broke the water to come into the world. Born of the spirit is being born again. To be born again we must believe in Jesus Christ and turn to Him.
“John 3:16-20 (ASV) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life. [17] For God sent not the Son into the world to judge the world; but that the world should be saved through him. [18] He that believeth on him is not judged: he that believeth not hath been judged already, because he hath not believed on the name of the only begotten Son of God. [19] And this is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil. [20] For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, lest his works should be reproved.”
