Jesus Christ on the cross – 2025.04.18

John 19:28-30 (NKJV)
28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!”
29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth.
30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

Jesus Christ was crucified because it was GOD’s plan of redemption. This has been prophesied right through the Old Testament, witnesses in the New Testament before His ministry and Jesus Christ declared it multiple times to His disciples. The religious leader wanted Him crucified for many reasons, here are some:

  • Jealous of Jesus Christ because people listened and believed in Him “John 12:19 (KJV) The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.”
  • Broke the law in their perception “John 5:16 (KJV) And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.”
  • Jesus Christ made Himself equal to GOD “John 5:18 (KJV) Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.”
  • The leaders did not have GOD’s love “John 5:42 (KJV) But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.”
  • The high priest prophesied it “John 11:49-53 (NKJV) And one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, [50] nor do you consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish.” [51] Now this he did not say on his own authority; but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, [52] and not for that nation only, but also that He would gather together in one the children of God who were scattered abroad. [53] Then, from that day on, they plotted to put Him to death.”

Jesus Christ accomplished so much on the cross. A summary of some of them are:

  • Scriptures predicting His birth, life and sacrifice on the cross are now fulfilled
  • suffered the wrath of God against sin
  • to deliver us from GOD’s wrath and sin
  • to provide us with salvation and eternal life

Let us be encourage today knowing that the work of the atonement of sin by Jesus Christ had been completed – It is finished!
Let us stand firm in that knowledge and not seek to add anything more to the finished work on the cross. “Galatians 5:1-6 (KJV) Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. [2] Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. [3] For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. [4] Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. [5] For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. [6] For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.”
