Acts 20:18-21 (KJV)
18 And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons,
19 Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews:
20 And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house,
21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.
Let us be encouraged to be witnesses of Jesus Christ. Here we have some of the keys to be His witness.
We are to:
- Be a witness in all seasons (see verse 18). “2 Timothy 4:2 (KJV) Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.”
- Serve the LORD in humility. This is not just humble actions but that our thoughts are humble (see verse 19). “Romans 12:3 (KJV) For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.”
- Persevere in hardship because in the end we will see our reward. Interaction with people can be very messy. There can be disappointments, betrayal, seemingly wasted effort, setbacks, breakthroughs, etc. (see verse 19). “Psalms 126:5 (KJV) They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.”
- Resist and overcome temptations (see verse 19). When we are doing the LORD’s work the devil with his demons will try to hinder us in many ways like persecution, temptation to sin, etc.. “Ephesians 6:10-12 (KJV) Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. [11] Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. [12] For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
- Share the complete Gosple (“Jesus died for your sin – believe, repent and follow Him”), keeping nothing back (see verse 20). That includes the hard stuff like: sin, judgement repentance, taking up our cross, etc.. “Romans 1:16 (KJV) For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” Here is a little more about this verse https://missioncommunities.network/2024/11/11/the-gospel-and-faith-2024-11-11/.
- Teach the words of Jesus Christ as the Holy Spirit guides us both publicly and from house to house where the church gathers (see verse 20). This is to make disciples.
- Share the good news with anyone not just a specific group of people. This includes: repentance and faith in Jesus Christ (see verse 21).
Tomorrow we will continue to look at parts of this chapter.
Let us pray. Father, we come to you in the name of Jesus Christ and ask in His name, that you fill us with the Holy Spirit and lead an guide us to be your witnesses. Help us to be bold and courageous to share the whole Gosple, fight the good fight by doing what it says in James 4:7 (KJV) “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”, to make disciples and teach them your ways. We cannot do this ourself we need you to work through us as you have commanded us to be your witnesses. “Matthew 28:18-20 (KJV) And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. [19] Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: [20] Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
