Acts 20:33-37 (KJV)
33 I have coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel.
34 Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me.
35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.
36 And when he had thus spoken, he kneeled down, and prayed with them all.
37 And they all wept sore, and fell on Paul’s neck, and kissed him,
When Paul went on mission he made it a point not to be a burden to those who he was reaching out to. He often used his profession, being a tent maker, to provide for his needs. At other times a church would give him funds for the next mission. “2 Corinthians 11:7-9 (KJV) Have I committed an offence in abasing myself that ye might be exalted, because I have preached to you the gospel of God freely? [8] I robbed other churches, taking wages of them, to do you service. [9] And when I was present with you, and wanted, I was chargeable to no man: for that which was lacking to me the brethren which came from Macedonia supplied: and in all things I have kept myself from being burdensome unto you, and so will I keep myself.”
Paul was an example for us to learn from and follow when we do the LORD’s work, supported the weak, gave Himself and demonstrated that there is more blessings in giving than receiving. (see this link on more abut these verses https://missioncommunities.network/2025/10/16/converting-giving-and-receiving-2025-10-16/).
Jesus Christ meant the gospel, the good news, to be free. “Matthew 10:8 (KJV) Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.”
Let us therefore be imitators of Paul and be those who work to support the LORD’s work we and others are doing and not being a burden on others relying on their generosity to support the work and charge for the Word of God that is meant to be free for everyone.
Let us pray. Father we thank You that You give Jesus Christ your only begotten Son to us that we might be saved and reconciled with you. Therefore help us to be those who freely give of ourself for your work not expecting anything in return from those who we are blessing. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
