Matthew 3:8 (KJV) Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
Right through the ages GOD has called people to repentance. In the New Testament John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus Christ and called people to repentance. Jesus Christ called people to repent, the Apostles called people to repentance and the LORD ask us who continue the call.
- John the Baptist “Matthew 3:1-2 (KJV) In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, [2] And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
- Jesus “Matthew 4:17 (KJV) From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
- Apostles before the cross “Mark 6:12 (KJV) And they went out, and preached that men should repent.”
- Apostles after the cross “Acts 2:38 (KJV) Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
- We “Matthew 28:19-20 (KJV) Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: [20] Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”, “2 Peter 3:8-9 (KJV) But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. [9] The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”
Repentance is a major part of the gospel Jesus Christ asked us to preach. The message is simple and covers: Faith in Jesus Christ and His work on the cross, repentance and following Jesus Christ.
Repentance only come when one realises that one is sick with sin and discovers the solution in Jesus Christ.
“Matthew 9:12-13 (KJV) But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. [13] But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
Let us look at the fruits of repentance. Repentance needs to be evident. One can not just say I repent and nothing happens. Repentance comes from faith because one believes. That faith has legs and out of that an inward and from that an outward change happens. That change becomes evident by the fruits. One will ceased to think and do the things that one used to do that were contrary to GOD and one will start doing the things that Jesus Christ asked us to do. Galatians 5:22-25 describes the character of the fruit (KJV) “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, [23] Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. [24] And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. [25] If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”. The increase of this fruit is an indication of repentance as well as the actions that follow this fruit. We have just touched the surface of this very important action of repentance and its outcomes.
In short repentance is truing from our ways to following Jesus Christ. The fruits of repentance come out of that faith in and relationship with Jesus Christ. This turns us to follow Jesus Christ, being obedient to Him every day.
Therefore let us be encouraged to repent, keep on repenting (when we miss the mark) and preach the gospel, bearing the fruits of true repentance.
Let us pray. Father thank You for Your love. Thank You for Jesus Christ and His work on the cross. Thank you for sending your Holy Spirit to convict, teach and lead me to repentance. Forgive me my sins and help me to believe and continue to believe in Jesus Christ and turn away from my sins and follow you every day. Thank You for Your love, goodness, mercy and grace.
“Romans 2:4 (KJV) Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?”
