How to respond to anger – 2025.03.12

Proverbs 15:1 (KJV) A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

When an angry person confronts us it is good to de-escalate and this is done by a soft/gentle answer. It is a voice of reason in a calm and peaceful manner. People who are angry are very often unreasonable. Answering in a soft manner can dispel a potentially tense situation. This can dissolve a person’s wrath/rage. Brining conciliation in such a situation requires forethought and the fruit of the Spirit like patience, self-control and kindness. In the converse a harsh/hurtful reply or action increases rather than reduces anger. This does not mean we are to compromise on truth but It is about the manner we deal with the situation that can either de-escalate or escalate it. If all fails we will need to walk away.

Here are some more pointers about this in proverbs 15:

Therefore let us be encourage to be peacemakers. “Matthew 5:9 (KJV) Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.”. https://bible.com/bible/116/mat.5.9

Let us pray. Father give us the wisdom when we come in to a situation with someone who is angry on how to deal with it. Lead us by you Holy Spirit. Help us not to respond in anger but instead endeavour to make peace. Help us to answer in such a way that the person clams down and we can calmly reason with them to help them see things clearly. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
