Proverbs 17:27 (KJV) He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit. https://bible.com/bible/116/pro.17.27
There are a few things we can learn from this, here are some:
- In the world, one who knows a lot of stuff is the one who talks heaps but in GOD’s economy it is to be different.
- GOD wants us to not wrap our message with many words but get to the point.
- We also see that rash/thoughtless speech and quick temper/knew jerk reactions can indicate: a shallow character, lack of self control, pride, ….
- When we have understanding we have assurance, and can be calm and not get agitated if people disagree, do not understand, or try to force their opinions. Therefore we don’t need to strive.
- We are to be respectful to see what others have to say and not try to dominate conversations.
- Cultivate the ability to listen. With that we then, by GOD’s wisdom, can draw out things to understand what is in someone’s heart and help them. “Proverbs 20:5 (KJV) Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.” https://bible.com/bible/116/pro.20.5
Other scriptures that come to mind reading this are:
- “1 Corinthians 14:29-31 (KJV) Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge. [30] If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace. [31] For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.” https://bible.com/bible/116/1co.14.29-31- ministers (here it mentions prophets) know more about the scriptures or what GOD is saying but should give preference to others to share and speak what GOD revealed to them. This is one of the ways of how we grow together.
- “Matthew 6:7 (KJV) But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.” https://bible.com/bible/116/mat.6.7 – even when we talk to GOD, He does not want us to fill out talk with many words but get strait to the point.
- “James 1:19 (KJV) Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:” https://bible.com/bible/116/jas.1.19 – this is very close to Proverbs 17:27.
- Also have a read of James 3:1-12 - https://bible.com/bible/116/jas.3.1-12
Therefore let us be encoraged to spare our words not wanting to be the centre of the conversation by controlling it with many words. Let us aim to get right to the point, let us carefully consider what we say before we open our mouth. Ask questions like: will this edify, help, encourage, lift up, bless, or do the opposite?
“Philippians 4:8-9 (KJV) Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. [9] Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.” https://bible.com/bible/116/php.4.8-9
“Romans 12:10 (NKJV) Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another;” https://bible.com/bible/116/rom.12.10
Let us pray. Father in the name of Jesus Christ help us to be people of not many words but of words which hit the mark, inspired by You, which help, which build up, using our words to serve and not come in to the limelight. Help us to exercise self control, be calm and be humble in our conversations. Amen.
