Psalms 23:6 (KJV) Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
What is mercy?
Free Dictionary defines it as:
- Compassionate treatment, especially of those under one’s power; clemency.
- Compassionate or kindly forbearance shown toward an offender, an enemy, or other person in one’s power; compassion or benevolence.
- A disposition to be kind and forgiving: a heart full of mercy.
- Something for which to be thankful; a blessing: It was a mercy that no one was hurt.
- Alleviation of distress; relief: Taking in the refugees was an act of mercy.
- The disposition or discretionary power to be compassionate or forbearing.
- An act of kindness, compassion, or favor.
- Something of good fortune; blessing: It was a mercy they weren’t hurt.
In many places of the scriptures it says that GOD’s mercy endures forever, there is no end to it:
“1 Chronicles 16:34 (KJV) O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.”
In Psalms 103:8-14 (KJV) we have a good description of GOD’s mercy: “The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. [9] He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever. [10] He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. [11] For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. [12] As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. [13] Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him. [14] For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.”
It continues on “Psalms 103:17-18 (KJV) But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children; [18] To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.”.
“Romans 9:15-16 (KJV) For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. [16] So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.”
To avail ourself of His mercy we need to respond to the goodness of GOD shown thorough His son Jesus Christ.
“John 3:16-18 (KJV) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. [17] For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. [18] He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
He has the expectation that we continue in His ways and reciprocate His mercy to others.
“Matthew 6:14-15 (KJV) For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: [15] But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”
Therefore let us all be encouraged always to follow Jesus, endeavouring to walk in His ways and when we miss the mark to call on Him to have mercy on us as well as b wing merciful to others.
“Romans 10:13 (KJV) For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
“Luke 17:13 (KJV) And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.”
