What is the cost – 2025.06.25

Luke 14:28-29 (KJV)
28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?
29 Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,

We are to count the cost of being a follower/disciple of Jesus Christ.
In this section of chapter 14 it gives us some insight to us what the cost, that we need to consider, is.

  • “Luke 14:33 (KJV) So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.”
  • “Luke 14:26 (KJV) If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.”
  • “Luke 14:27 (KJV) And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.”

This shows what Jesus Christ said in Matthew 7:13-14 (KJV) that it is not a way that many will choose “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: [14] Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”. “John 14:6 (KJV) Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”.
Counting the cost is about priorities and love. It does not mean to neglect one’s family and not love them. It is about given the highest priority to and loving Jesus Christ more than anything thing or anyone else. It is when making decisions to be willing, when needed, to forsake everything/everyone else. For example: If Jesus Christ calls you to go on a mission and family and friends advise one against going then one is to still go and be obedient to Jesus Christ and the missions He is giving. Another example is being able to when Jesus Christ asks to give away the thing one enjoys and or loves.

Therefore let us all be encouraged today and every day to keep counting the cost, to take up our cross, to put Jesus Christ first above everything and everyone.

In the end it all comes down to our trust and love in/for Jesus Christ.
“Matthew 5:10-12 (KJV) Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [11] Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. [12] Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.”
