The Temptation of Jesus PART 2 – 2026.06.23

Matthew 4:1-11 (KJV)
1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

Why does the devil temp Jesus Christ?
The devil wanted to derail what GOD wants to do and destroy Jesus Christ for he knew who Jesus is.
It is the nature of the devil to tempt, devour, kill, destroy….. “John 10:10 (KJV) The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”
https://bible.com/bible/116/jhn.10.10.NLT
“1 Peter 5:8-9 (KJV) Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: [9] Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.” https://bible.com/bible/116/1pe.5.8-9.NLT

He wants to take away the Word of God “Luke 8:11-12 (KJV) Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. [12] Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.”

The devil likes to destroy the person after GOD has given them a promise, declared their purpose and after an act of obedience. For Jesus Christ this was at His baptism.
“Matthew 3:15-17 (KJV) And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. [16] And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: [17] And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

He then comes to challenge GOD’s promise and declaration by bringing doubt and states “If you are the son of GOD then prove it by …..”

Therefore let us be encouraged to be aware of the devils tricks and not fall for them.
“2 Corinthians 2:11 (KJV) Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.”

Let us pray. Father, we come to you in the name of Jesus Christ our LORD and Saviour. We ask you to help us to be alert and not sleep so that we will not fall for the tricks of the devil. Help us to be especially be on guard when you show us something in your word, give us a promise and when we obey you. Amen.
