Luke 17:1-4 (KJV)
1 Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe unto him, through whom they come!
2 It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.
3 Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.
4 And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.
These verses really challenge me. We need the Lords help not to cause people to stumble but instead to be good godly examples to those inside and outside the church. (1 Peter 4:8 (KJV) And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.) but it doesn’t mean to just forgive and leave it, which we often do as it is the easy way out. It means we need to help each other by giving correction, in love, and forgive the sin even when a person keeps doing it. We want to help each other in growing, becoming more like Jesus. Because of pride and being unteachable we don’t like to have our faults pointed out but we should receive correction in humility and being teachable.
The Bible Knowledge commentary puts it well
“Not only are Jesus’ followers not to cause others to sin; they also are to counteract sin by forgiving others (Luk 17:3-4). One should rebuke a brother if he sins. If he repents, he is to be forgiven even if he sins and repents over and over. The words seven times in a day denote a completeness – as often as it happens.”
Also in our readings to day we see Aaron fashioned the gold calf as demanded by the people is one example of Aaron causing offence and not rebuking the people so Moses had to step in. (Exodus 32:25 (KJV) And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:).)
Correction and rebuking in a gracious way is a godly thing to do to help others and this 1st needs to be done in private (see Matthew 18:15-17). Often we don’t see our own sin and we need each other to point them out.
James 5:20 (KJV) Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.
Lord forgive us in our failures in this matter and help us not to be a stumbling block to others, also to forgive those who sin but not only that but to help each other by pointing out our failures in a loving and gracious way. In Jesus name.
