Nehemiah 8:3 (KJV) And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law.
What a picture we have here about the reading of the Word of God. Everyone together, everyone old enough to understand was gathered together to hear from the Book of Life, the Bible. Everyone paid full attention, without being distracted from morning to lunch time.
Not only was the Word read but the appointed teachers explained the Word of God as it was read.
“Nehemiah 8:7-8 (KJV) Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people stood in their place. [8] So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.”
The Word of God did its work in the hearts of the people brining conviction of sin, repentance followed gladness and feasting in celebration of the LORD GOD Almighty.
“Nehemiah 8:9 (KJV) And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the LORD your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.”
“Nehemiah 8:12 (KJV) And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them.”
Therefore let us be encourage to keep gathering together to hear, learn, understand and apply the Word of God in our life that Jesus Christ might be glorified and worshiped and also read and meditate on the His word daily. For we know that “Romans 10:17 (KJV) So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
“Psalms 29:1-2 (KJV) A Psalm of David. Give unto the LORD, O ye mighty, give unto the LORD glory and strength. [2] Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.”
