Sleeping person reaches toward phone reading "Calling... Mom" as "*RIIING!*" and "*BUZZZ!*" appear; clock reads 3:14 AM.

The phone rings in the middle of the night – 2026.10.16

Luke 8:23-24 (WEB)

23 But as they sailed, he fell asleep. A wind storm came down on the lake, and they were taking on dangerous amounts of water.

24 They came to him, and awoke him, saying, “Master, master, we are dying!” He awoke, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water, and they ceased, and it was calm.

Here is a contemplation from someone anonymous.

The phone rings in the middle of the night, and before you answer, something inside you already knows that life is about to change. A diagnosis arrives with words you never expected to hear. A relationship ends in a single conversation. A financial loss leaves you staring at numbers that no longer make sense. Or perhaps nothing dramatic happens at all—only the quiet realization that the strength you have depended on is gone.

One moment, life feels familiar. The next, the ground beneath you seems to give way. Fear rises. Questions crowd your mind. The future becomes uncertain, and burdens you once managed suddenly feel impossible to carry. You may find yourself asking, “What do I do now?” or “How will I get through this?”

In such moments, when your plans have failed and your own strength is no longer enough, Christ does not meet you with condemnation. He meets you with compassion and invites you to draw near:

“Will you keep carrying life alone, or will you trust Me and follow Me?”

A crisis can become a turning point.

It is a moment that reveals where we have placed our hope and gently invites us to look beyond ourselves to Christ.

  • Which way will I go?
  • What will I trust?
  • Who will I follow?

We cannot always control what happens to us, but we can bring our fear, questions, and uncertainty to Jesus. When everything around us is shaken, we can choose where to place our hope.

As anxiety rises and we feel empty, lost, afraid, disappointed, or unfulfilled, something within us may begin to cry out:

“There has to be more.”

And there is.

Our deepest crisis is not simply anxiety, failure, loneliness, or uncertainty. Beneath all these struggles lies our separation from God.

And our deepest answer is not found in having more of this world.

The answer is Jesus.

So when trouble comes, do not turn away from Christ. Instead, let the pain become a place where you draw near to Him.

  • You do not need to have all the answers.
  • You do not need to fix yourself first.
  • You do not need to become worthy before you come.

Come as you are.

  • When you are afraid, seek Him.
  • When you are confused, listen for His voice.
  • When you are empty, receive His presence.
  • When you have failed, run to His mercy.
  • When you do not know what tomorrow holds, place tomorrow in His hands.

As we entrust our lives to Him, something begins to change. We stop asking,

“How can I control everything?”

and begin asking,

“Jesus, what are You asking me to trust You with?”

The world tells us that surrender means losing our freedom. Jesus shows us that surrender to Him is where true freedom begins:

  • Freedom from carrying everything ourselves.
  • Freedom from being ruled by fear.
  • Freedom from chasing what can never satisfy.
  • Freedom to become who God created us to be.

Christ calls us out of darkness and into His light, out of fear and into faith, out of self-reliance and into surrender, and out of death and into life.

Following Christ does not mean we will never face trouble. It means we never have to face it without Him.

Jesus does not promise a life without storms.

He promises to be with us in the storm.

He does not promise that every problem will disappear immediately.

He promises that we will never be beyond His reach.

So perhaps your crisis is not the end of your story.

Perhaps, even here, it can become the moment when you discover that Christ is near.

The greatest decision we will ever make is not what career we choose, what success we achieve, or what the world thinks of us.

It is what we do with Jesus.

Because in Christ there is hope.

  • In Christ there is peace.
  • In Christ there is forgiveness.
  • In Christ there is life.

And when we do not know which way to go,

Jesus is the Way.

Lord Jesus, meet us at every turning point. When hardship exposes our weakness, remind us of Your strength.

When fear overwhelms us, remind us of Your presence.

When life feels empty, draw us closer to You. Help us stop running from You and start running into Your arms. Be first in our hearts, our choices, and our lives. Shape our desires, guide our decisions, and let everything we do flow from our love for You. Be our greatest desire and highest priority. Be the centre of our thoughts, relationships, plans, and future. Teach us to want You more than the things of this world. When life is shaken, help us discover that You are the Rock beneath our feet. Use even our hardest moments to deepen our faith and remind us that our hope is not found in circumstances, but in You.🙏♥️

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas.” — Psalm 46:1–2 WEB

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 WEB

If this helped, encouraged, or blessed you, pass it on to someone else who will benefit.
