1 Timothy 1:3-7 (WEB)
3 As I urged you when I was going into Macedonia, stay at Ephesus that you might command certain men not to teach a different doctrine,
4 and not to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which cause disputes, rather than God’s stewardship, which is in faith—
5 but the goal of this command is love, out of a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith;
6 from which things some, having missed the mark, have turned away to vain talking;
7 desiring to be teachers of the law, though they understand neither what they say, nor about what they strongly affirm.
Here we can see that those who teach a different doctrine have a lack of understanding. For more on the different doctrine have a look at the devotions on these verses.
Understanding can come from different sources:
- GOD giving us understanding
- Our own mind trying to understand using human/earthly wisdom, resulting in s lack of understanding
- The devils deception, resulting in a lack of understanding
Let’s look at each one briefly in reverse order.
The Devil has been a deceiver right from the beginning so do not listen to him.
He changes whatever GOD says and sows doubt and then injects what he wants us to think. This is how he started of to deceive Adam and Eve.
“Genesis 3:1 (WEB) Now the serpent was more subtle than any animal of the field which Yahweh God had made. He said to the woman, “Has God really said, ‘You shall not eat of any tree of the garden’?””.
There are many examples in the bible. “Acts 13:8-10 (WEB) But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith. [9] But Saul, who is also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fastened his eyes on him, [10] and said, “You son of the devil, full of all deceit and all cunning, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?”
He even tried it with Jesus Christ Himself. So let us be encouraged and be aware of his schemes and not be tricked (2 Corinthians 2:11).
It is in our human nature to want to try to understand things. Now realy understanding things of GOD with our mind in human wisdom is not totally possible.
- GOD is infinite, we are finite
- GOD is all knowing, we are very limited in knowledge and knowledge is different for each one of us with overlaps
- GOD sees all, we only see what is in front of us and even forget or misremember.
- GOD is truth, we only look at things from our perspective and can get the wrong or incomplete picture
- Etc. etc.
Here are some verses about this:
- “Ephesians 4:17-19 (WEB) This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, [18] being darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their hearts; [19] who having become callous gave themselves up to lust, to work all uncleanness with greediness.”
- “2 Corinthians 10:12 (WEB) For we are not bold to number or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves. But they themselves, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves with themselves, are without understanding.”
- “John 3:10-13 (WEB) Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and don’t understand these things? [11] Most certainly I tell you, we speak that which we know, and testify of that which we have seen, and you don’t receive our witness. [12] If I told you earthly things and you don’t believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? [13] No one has ascended into heaven, but he who descended out of heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven.”
- Have a read of Romans 1:18-32 showing what GOD reveals and how people tend to react.
So we can see that, so called understanding that comes from, both the devil and the human mind actually result in lack of understanding.
Finally let’s look at the true understanding that comes from GOD. The only way we can understand things that are of GOD or heavenly are by GOD Himself revelling it to us. This requires a soft heart and childlike faith.
In Matthew 16:15-18 we can see this very clearly. “(WEB) He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” [16] Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” [17] Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. [18] I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my assembly, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.”.
Peter understood that Jesus Christ is the Messiah, the Christ, not because of human wisdom and understanding but by revelation from GOD. Revelation is the rock on which Jesus Christ is building His CHurch. When people looked at Jesus Christ with their own understanding they came up with with thing like this:
- “Matthew 16:13-14 (WEB) Now when Jesus came into the parts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” [14] They said, “Some say John the Baptizer, some, Elijah, and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.””
- Or even: “Luke 11:15 (WEB) But some of them said, “He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of the demons.””
To realy start understanding things of GOD we need to be born again. “John 3:3 (WEB) Jesus answered him, “Most certainly, I tell you, unless one is born anew, he can’t see God’s Kingdom.”” And “John 3:5-8 (WEB) Jesus answered, “Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born of water and spirit, he can’t enter into God’s Kingdom. [6] That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit. [7] Don’t marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born anew.’ [8] The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but don’t know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.””
When we are born again by the Spirit of GOD we discover what it say in 1 Corinthians 2:10-16 “(WEB) But to us, God revealed them through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. [11] For who among men knows the things of a man, except the spirit of the man, which is in him? Even so, no one knows the things of God, except God’s Spirit. [12] But we received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from God, that we might know the things that were freely given to us by God. [13] Which things also we speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches, but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual things. [14] Now the natural man doesn’t receive the things of God’s Spirit, for they are foolishness to him, and he can’t know them, because they are spiritually discerned. [15] But he who is spiritual discerns all things, and he himself is judged by no one. [16] “For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he should instruct him?” But we have Christ’s mind.”
We start seeing things more from GODs perspective.
“Romans 11:33-36 (WEB) Oh the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out! [34] “For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?” [35] “Or who has first given to him, and it will be repaid to him again?” [36] For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things. To him be the glory for ever! Amen.”
Not the questions is how do we become born again? This is by faith, that if believing in the good news of Jesus Christ and Turing away from our sins and flowing Jesus Christ.
“John 3:16-21 (WEB) For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. [17] For God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him. [18] He who believes in him is not judged. He who doesn’t believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God. [19] This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil. [20] For everyone who does evil hates the light, and doesn’t come to the light, lest his works would be exposed. [21] But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his works may be revealed, that they have been done in God.””
