1 Timothy 1:6-11 (WEB) from which things some, having missed the mark, have turned away to vain talking; [7] desiring to be teachers of the law, though they understand neither what they say, nor about what they strongly affirm. [8] But we know that the law is good, if a person uses it lawfully, [9] as knowing this, that law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, [10] for the sexually immoral, for homosexuals, for slave-traders, for liars, for perjurers, and for any other thing contrary to the sound doctrine; [11] according to the Good News of the glory of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.

There are two ways to use the law:

1. Lawfully and
2. Unlawfully

Often using it unlawfully comes from ignorance and lack of understanding of the purpose of the law, GOD’s intent, and the glorious good news (gospel).

Instead of labouring on this point lets us be encouraged by looking at how we use the law lawfully.

When we are born again, the LORD gives us a new heart, replacing the heart of stone with a heart of flesh (Ezekiel 36:26). Now we want to please GOD and live like He wants us to live life. He writes His law on our hearts. Jesus Christ showed us that what GOD expects is more than just fulfilling the letter of the law (Matthew 5:17-48). He wants us to be perfect “Matthew 5:20 (WEB) For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, there is no way you will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.” – “Matthew 5:48 (WEB) Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.”. For us as created human being it is impossible to fulfil the requirement of the law let alone do the things Jesus Christ said. He is the ones who dwells in us by the Holy Spirit and now as we walk in the Spirit we will bear the fruit of the Spirit. “Galatians 5:16 (WEB) But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh.” (Galatian 5:22-25). It is all because we are abiding in Jesus Christ the vine (John 15:1-17).

• Christ in us enables perfection.
• He is our righteousness.
• Without Christ we are nothing.

So how do we use the law lawfully?
“Romans 3:20 (WEB) Because by the works of the law, no flesh will be justified in his sight. For through the law comes the knowledge of sin.”

When we proclaim the gosple, the law is a tutor “Galatians 3:24 (WEB) So that the law has become our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.” It shows us that:

• We are undone,
• Nothing good dwells in us and
• We are sinners.

The Holy Spirit convicts when the gosple is proclaimed. “John 16:8 (WEB) When he has come, he will convict the world about sin, about righteousness, and about judgment;”

When the full gospel is preached it will show that all have sinned (Romans 3:9-31) and that we need to repent of our sins “Matthew 9:13 (WEB) But you go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’ for I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”” (Acts 3:19)

• We can’t save ourselves – we need a saviour and Jesus Christ is the only one who can ,
• We are desperately wicked. “Jeremiah 17:9 (KJV) The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”
• We are brought to a state of realisation that we are poor in spirit “Matthew 5:3 (WEB) “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.”.
• We are caused to humble ourself before GOD as we realise that nothing good dwells in us calling on His grace and mercy. “Romans 7:18 (WEB) For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwells no good thing. For desire is present with me, but I don’t find it doing that which is good.”

All this, by the working of the Holy Spirit and the proclamation of the full gospel, causes us to call on the LORD to be saved.

Therfore let us be encouraged when proclaiming the gosple to share it fully which includes: that we all have sinned, that we can’t save ourselves, that there is only forgiveness of sin though the work of Jesus on the cross, that Jesus Christ paid the price we could not pay, that He came to reconcile us back to GOD because we are His enemies because of sin that we inherited from Adam, that right standing with GOD (righteousness) comes only through Jesus, that we need to believe in Jesus and repent form our sins and now follow and obey Him.

“Galatians 3:22-25 (WEB) But the Scripture imprisoned all things under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. [23] But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, confined for the faith which should afterwards be revealed. [24] So that the law has become our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. [25] But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.”
