Pip: Mission Communities Network has been working through 1 Timothy verse by verse, and it turns out one verse can carry a surprising amount of weight.

Mara: This episode covers two stretches of that letter — what Paul’s apostleship reveals about Christ’s identity and the gifts he gave the church, and then what grace, mercy, and peace actually mean for Timothy and for us.

Pip: Let’s start with the apostle and the one who sent him.

Paul’s Apostleship and Christ’s Identity

Mara: The anchor here is 1 Timothy 1:1 — a single verse that raises immediate questions about authority, identity, and purpose. Who commanded Paul, and what does that tell us about who Jesus Christ is?

Pip: The post “Commanded To Be An Apostle” goes straight to the source on that command, quoting Ephesians 4: “He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things. And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.”

Mara: So the upshot is that these roles — apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, teachers — aren’t self-appointed. They flow from Christ’s ascension. He descended, he ascended, and out of that movement he gave gifts to the church.

Pip: And there’s a distinction worth holding: everyone in the church has a ministry, but not everyone is a minister. The roles are specific; the calling is universal.

Mara: “Who Jesus Christ is” then unpacks what that same verse says about Christ himself — that he is Hope, Lord, Saviour, and God the Son. He uses the name God revealed to Moses: “Before Abraham was, I am.” That’s the claim the whole argument rests on.

Pip: Which makes the third piece, “Gift of GOD,” the logical next step — if Christ is God the Son given by the Father, then believers become ambassadors of that gift. Not to earn salvation, but as a result of it.

Mara: Ephesians 2:10 puts it plainly: we are “created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” The works follow the grace; they don’t precede it.

Pip: That distinction — response versus requirement — is exactly where the next segment picks up.

Grace and Faith in Timothy

Mara: 1 Timothy 1:2 addresses Timothy as Paul’s “own son in the faith” and pronounces grace, mercy, and peace over him. “True Son In The Faith” asks what that relationship actually looks like — and what makes it genuine rather than imposed.

Pip: A true son in faith is formed through relationship, trust, and respect — not assignment. The post notes that Paul’s model is Christ himself, who called and made disciples through real connection. Forced mentorship, it says plainly, rarely lasts.

Mara: And “Grace, Mercy and Peace” grounds those three words in definitions that are easy to gloss over. Grace is divine favour freely given. Mercy is unmerited compassion and relief. Peace — and this is the specific claim — is first peace with God, then inner steadiness regardless of circumstances.

Pip: The post quotes John 14:27 directly: “My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.” That’s a different kind of peace than the absence of conflict.

Mara: And like the gifts in the first segment, these require nothing to obtain — only faith in the gospel.

Pip: One verse of Paul, several days of unpacking — and the thread running through all of it is that the gifts move downward: from Father to Son, from Christ to the church, from mentor to disciple.
